Does your property look worn, tired or dirty? Then why not give it a new lease of life with a fresh coat of paint. If you have got lots of time to spare, you might be thinking about painting the outside of your home yourself.
If so, here are some top tips you should remember when painting your property. Follow all these steps and you will make your property look more attractive for very little cost!
Painting the Exterior Walls
When painting the outside of your walls, make sure that you pick the right day. If it is rainy, this will affect the paint, whereas if it is too humid, the paint won’t be able to adhere to the walls. So the best thing you can do is paint your property in the late summer, early autumn.
Once you have picked a good day, make sure you choose the right paint. Interior and exterior paints have very different qualities so you cannot substitute one for the other. Masonry paint comes in a range of finishes and colours and will enable you to cover cracks, holes and uneven surfaces.
Should you have timber cladding, you need to use a weatherproof wood paint. Make sure you read the back of the paint tin. If in any doubt, ask the shop attendant in your home store.
Preparing Pebbledash Walls
Before you begin painting your pebbledash walls, you will need to prepare the surface so the paint can properly adhere to the surface. Remove loose dirt, debris and grime with a stiff brush. Then give your walls a good clean and wipe. To ensure a really good finish, sand down your walls so that they are really smooth and there is no leftover loose materials.
Painting Rendered Walls
Painting render is a lot easier than working with pebbledash. However you still need to prepare your surfaces, so you need to fill any holes and smooth down any bumps. Once this is complete, you can mist coat the surface with a painter sprayer for best effects. When you have applied the paint make sure you leave lots of drying time before the next coat of paint.
Painting Pebbedash Walls
One of the biggest issues with pebbledash walls is that the pebbles and small stones make a highly uneven surface. So you should use a high quality masonry brush to properly paint the surface. You will also need a small paintbrush to effectively cut in the windows and doors. When you paint, take a lot of care and attentions so that you avoid dripping paint in places you don’t want.
Painting Brickwork Walls
Should you have walls made from bricks then just like other surfaces you will need to prepare the surface. Bricks are very porous so use a breathable primer for the best effect. Once you have completed this, you can then begin painting the walls.
