Today’s update is all about the windows and shutters and the big front doors at the Tall House. I’ve got a series of slides I shared on Instagram over two days, that ended up starting an unexpected, and pretty darn delightful cultural exchange. Here’s the report:
On the first day, I talked about how the window work was basically complete. And then I went into detail about our plans for the big front doors (like how we’re going to attempt to insulate them). I also answered a lot of related Q&A about the doors and the shutters and window screens.
Most Americans don’t have functioning shutters, so they had lots of questions. When I posted those questions, I started getting responses from French people who were confused about the shutter questions from the Americans. The Europeans didn’t know Americans were so unfamiliar with shutters.
The following day, I posted more updates, giving a demonstration (demo) on how the shutters worked. I also posted some of the questions from the French people asked about window screens. And of course, the Americans didn’t realize that screens aren’t widespread in Europe.
It ended up being an informative and very wholesome exchange that brought a lot of smiles. : )
I’d love to hear: Have you ever lived in house with functional shutters? Did you enjoy the ritual of opening the shutters each morning and closing them in the evening? And how would you feel about windows without screens? Would that drive you up the wall?
P.S. — More Tall House updates.
