Key Words: Elon Musk still doesn’t know whether he’s voting for Trump or Biden, but he might by Tuesday night

Elon Musk, who’s got your vote in November?

‘Let’s just see how the debates go… I think that’s going to be the thing that decides things for America.’

That’s his cagey answer when Kara Swisher posed the question in Monday’s episode of her “Sway” podcast for the New York Times. The first debate takes place on Tuesday, and the Tesla TSLA, +3.59% boss clearly thinks it’ll be a difference-maker, not only for him, but also for voters across the country.

Musk went on to explain why he has mixed feeling toward President Trump and what he could ultimately mean for his electric-car business.

“I have spoken to the president about sustainable energy many times and actually there are times when he’s been supportive, but then, at the end of the day, he has got way more support from the oil-and-gas industry because it’s way bigger,” Musk said. “The electric car industry is small.”

As for Joe Biden, Musk, who describes himself as “socially very liberal and then economically right of center, maybe, or center?” said he believes it’s his race to lose.

In other words, if Biden does well at the debates, he wins.

Back in 2016, Musk didn’t exactly throw his weight behind Trump, saying he “doesn’t seem to have the sort of character that reflects well on the United States” and he’s “probably not the right guy.”

Musk has, however, backed others in the past for the 2020 presidency, including Andrew Yang and his UBI platform, as well as Kanye West.
