Colorful ideas for setting a round dining table for Easter brunch using semi – DIY’ed no sew round placemats.

One thing that I have missed doing over the last year due to the pandemic, is having family and friends over for dinner or Sunday brunch. Not only to enjoy their company, but to give me a reason to take the time to create a pretty table setting.

It is something that I enjoy doing now, but sure wasn’t when I was kid growing up when the task of setting the family dinner table was one of my chores… “fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right.”

Finding enjoyment in setting a table for a meal began when I worked in retail display where I was in charge of setting all the display tables in the store with the china brands and dinnerware the store sold. I had the creative license to do what I wanted, which made the job fun.

You don’t see these displays very much in department stores anymore. It is one reason I think I like going into Pottery Barn, as they always have a few tables set up in inspiring ways with their latest collection of dinnerware.

HomeGoods finds

Back in January when strolling through HomeGoods, I found a set of melamine Tommy Bahama dinner plates seen in the photo above. I brought them home and am happy that I will get to use them for the first time to set the table for Easter brunch when my family will be coming. 🙂

To create my Easter brunch table setting, I gathered a few items I had on hand along with my new melamine plates.

I played around until I liked what I saw. My dining table is small, so I can’t add too many decorations to the table, only what is needed.

I like creating a layered look for each place setting. This can be done by simply using plate chargers, placemats, large and small plates, bowls and a napkin.

I had the round woven water hyacinth placemats and semi-DIY’ed the vinyl round woven placemats that I added on top to add interest.

The last thing I added was a cardboard berry basket with an Easter egg.

The green filler grass was something that came in packaging as cushioning.I thought it was too pretty to throw away so I kept it. I have had it in my craft supply closet just waiting to find a decorative use for it, It makes nice Easter grass, don’t you think?

How to Make No Sew Round Woven Placemats

The reason I wanted round placemats for my table setting is that they look so much better on a round dining table than rectangular placemats.

When using rectangular placemats on a round table, the ends always overlap with the adjacent place setting. This doesn’t look nice. It also adds an uneven surfaces all around the table which can make glasses tip over.

When using ready-made rectangular woven vinyl placemats as your material – no sewing is needed to transform them into a circular shape, plus the surface is reversible and easy to wipe clean.

How to Make No Sew Woven and Reversible Round Table Place Mats in Minutes

  1. Use Woven Vinyl Placemats

You can use any color and style of vinyl woven placemats to make round placemats.

  2. Lay Placemat Down on Work Table

Place one placemat on work table and then place a large 13″ diameter plate over placemat. It doesn’t matter which side of the placemat you place face down as each side is identical. Use a pencil to draw around the plate to mark the round shape on the placemat.

  3. Cut Out Drawn Circle

Using a pair of sharp scissors, cut out circle along the pencil line.

  4. All Done

That is all there is to it. Repeat the process for the amount of round placemats you need. Since it is made of vinyl the ends will not ravel as fabric would.

For my Easter brunch table setting, I layered my DIY round placemats over my existing woven raffia placemats that I bought at a yard sale many years ago.
