I love a good pop of color in Christmas decor just like the next guy, but I also love my classic cozy cottage neutral Christmas decor so today I wanted to share our cozy natural Christmas built-ins that are very Christmas-y without a ton of color, I will share who I think this style and space is good for, and some simple and easy tips to getting the same look in your home.
What is Neutral Christmas Decor and Who it meant for?

Neutral Christmas Decor is Christmas decor that is more expressive of seasonal earth tones versus the traditional red and green color palette. The earth tones we see are geared around wood, like that of logs and branches. The seasonal addition to the neutral space are those fresh greens like cedar, pine, and even holly. The seasonal colors bring in a nice base color into the space without overloading eyes.
Who is in Meant for?
Neutral Christmas Decor has a place in many homes and in many spaces. In the same sense of Halloween, we can achieve a very festive space without overloading our eyes with every Christmas labeled decor item you have in your home. This is a great solution for those that have a love/hate relationship with Christmas Decor. There are a lot of people that share they love the season of Christmas, and putting up all the decorations is part of that, but once it is up after a few days, they cannot wait to take it down.
This is also a great way to style for those grandparents and empty nesters, that don’t necessarily need all the glitz and glamor if the Christmas decor, but want to have a festive space.
Also, this can be a very budget friendly way to style. For those that don’t have a massive Christmas Decor collection from past years, a lot of the “neutral Christmas decor look,”, can be achieved with items you may already have in your home. Pairing current collections with some greens from trees and bushes outside your home, is a great way to decorate for Christmas while also keeping your style present. I initially think of young newlyweds entering their first years of Christmas. I look back at when Jose and I first got married, and how we wanted to make our home festive, but we’re on a tight budge. We ended up buying lower-end Christmas decor, that we didn’t truly love. Over time those items worked their way out, when we could have done a more simpler neutral look like this.
Where to style Neutral Christmas Decor?
Neutral Christmas Decor can be in any space in your home. If you find yourself resonating with someone who thinks this is a look you want, then put it in all spaces high traffic and low. However, if you want to keep your more traditional look (more prominent pops of color) in the main areas of your home, neutral Christmas Decor is a great style to your, not yet decorated and lower traffic spaces. Some people keep their Christmas decor isolated to the living room, so neutral Christmas decor is a great addition to Kitchens, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, and dens.
Tips and Tricks to achieving a Neutral Christmas Space
You need to start neutral to stay neutral
The very first thing you need to do to achieve a neutral look, is make sure you are starting neutral. Find neutral furniture and spaces in your home that already have earth tones, whites, tans, grays, and even black. Cabinets, Tables, Benches, bookshelves, fireplace mantels are common areas to start.
Pick your Natural Earth tones and Seasonal Greenery
Now that you have your space picked out, determine what seasonal greenery and earth tones times like stems, branches, and wood items you may want to bring into your look. If it is a long space, I love fresh garland sprawled across. For smaller areas like tables, a baskets or clear glass containers of stems and branches are a great way to add these items in. Cut logs tied in a bundle are great anchors to your vignette as well. I love candles in any space throughout the year, but especially during the colder months. The candles we used are battery powered candles in a wood base, and they are from Ikea.
Gather up your collections
If you already have collections of items, look for neutral based items and bring them into this space. A white bowl or stoneware (if you have some) are a great way to display smaller items.
Glass cloches that you may think are only for spring decor, are great ways to display other small items.
Books are always a good filler for shelves, or lay them on their side to change eye levels. If you don’t have vintage books that have a good neutral color, flip them around and put the binding facing inward to showoff the neutral pages.
Bring in the Christmas
So far we have created a great base. Another good thing about neutral Christmas decor, is the base is an easy way to transition back to from Christmas to winter decor. I used little bottle brush trees, woodland ornament deer. I found a neutral banner from Micheals [HERE] to also add into our space that I think is the perfect whimsical Christmas touch all while keeping it neutral.
