When it comes time to arrange flowers when decorating your home, why not think beyond a vase and arrange the flowers using a low bowl to create impact on a coffee table or outside on a porch, deck or patio.
When adding a few spring touches to my house, I was at a loss at what I wanted to place on the coffee table.
I knew I wanted to see something purple on it that would create impact and have a modern vibe, but an idea was just not coming to me.
Do you remember this large low-sided faux concrete bowl I made at Christmas for the dresser/console in my foyer?
I love the low bowl I made and thought I would style it for spring into a moss bowl or a succulent bowl that I have been seeing everywhere.
Instead I did something different, something with a pop of color for my living room.
It took a trip to Walmart to come up with an idea after seeing a flat of purple crocus in the garden shop.
I couldn’t use real flowers since the low bowl does not have a drainage hole and would not stand up to water in the long run. You could fill the planter with dirt and use real flowers if the bowl has a hole for drainage in the bottom.
Creating this flower arrangement was easy – like 15 minutes and done easy. 🙂
How I Created a Flower Arrangement in a Low Bowl Planter
supplies needed:
- Bowl with low sides – large or small depending on the look you want to achieve.
- Short stemmed faux flowers – if using taller blooms, cut to make each stem about 8″ – 12″ long.
- Styrofoam – I save blocks of it from packaging. No need to buy it at the craft store.
- Plastic grocery bags or shredded paper – to use as filler around the Styrofoam.
- Moss – I used colored Spanish style, but any style of moss would work.
- Fill bowl with Styrofoam – use one or more pieces to fill planter. If you look closely at the photo above where I am lifting up the moss, you can see the white block of Styrofoam in the center.
To secure foam in place, stuff plastic bags and/or shredded paper around the Styrofoam.
- Option: If your bowl is ceramic, glass or real stone, you can also use hot glue to secure the foam in the base of the bowl if you will always use the bowl with flowers.
2. Starting in the center, push in the ends of a few faux flowers stems straight up. As you add more flowers around the center ones, begin to push the stems in on an outward angle into the Styrofoam. Bend the stems slightly to fall to the outer edge of the planter.
3. Fill the bowl to the outer edge or leave an open border of exposed moss around the edge as I did.
Easy, colorful, impact – no clutter decorating, makes me happy. 🙂
